78 rpm vinyl records are a type of phonograph record that was popular between the late 1800s and the 1950s. They were played on a turntable using a needle, or stylus, that would vibrate as it traced the grooves of the record, producing sound. They were typically made of shellac, a brittle material, and were 10 inches in diameter. They played at a speed of 78 revolutions per minute (rpm) and could typically hold around 3-5 minutes of audio per side. Today, 78s are considered collectors’ items and can be difficult to find, but some enthusiasts still play them on vintage turntables.
